ALL-STATE JAZZ BAND CONDUCTOR BIO

Patty Darling is a composer, arranger, director and educator. She directs the Lawrence University Jazz Ensemble at the Lawrence University Conservatory of Music in Appleton, Wisconsin, where she also teaches classes in jazz composition, arranging and electronic music. Patty has composed music for a wide variety of mediums, including works for orchestra, wind ensemble, chamber groups, jazz ensembles, and instrumental soloists. She also serves as a clinician and adjudicator for high schools, honors bands and jazz festivals throughout the U.S. Her compositions have been performed and recorded by jazz ensembles worldwide, and are published and available through Sierra Music Publications, Inc. 

Patty completed her Bachelor of Music degree in Composition from the Lawrence University Conservatory of Music in 1985. While pursuing an advanced composition degree at the University of Minnesota, she assisted in the Electronic Music Department, and has over 15 years of experience in the creation, recording and production of original soundtracks for broadcast and corporate multimedia events that have been distributed worldwide. 

Patty has received awards for her compositions and arrangements from Down Beat Magazine, the Presser Foundation, the Eastman School of Music, the International Association for Jazz Education and the Wisconsin Arts Board.

2024 AUDITION MATERIALS

The following audition materials for the 2024 All-State Jazz Band are broken down by instrument. Click each link to download the audition materials.

Reminder for jazz drum set auditions: A click track has been added to the solo breaks in the jazz drum kit play-a-long tracks to aid students in navigating that particularly challenging part of the auditions. In addition, ALL drummers will submit the auxiliary percussion audition excerpt instead of having a separate audition for aux. perc. The judge will select a primary drum set player who will mostly play drum kit and possibly some auxiliary percussion, and a secondary drum set player who will mostly play auxiliary percussion and some drum kit.

All etudes should be performed with the provided play-along tracks. Scales and drum set style patterns should be performed unaccompanied.
